Pirelli and Porsche Through History
The Stuttgart-based manufacturer began producing cars in 1948 with the 356, a compact sports coupé derived from the legendary Volkswagen Beetle, also designed by Ferdinand Porsche. An “all at the back” vehicle: rear traction and an engine with overhanging opposed cylinders. This structure was a sign of the unique technical direction of Porsche cars. With the advent of the 911 in the mid-60s; the escalation in power became unstoppable and there was a demand for tyres able to transmit this power to the ground and keep even the most aggressive and powerful Porsche cars on the road. As it does for all its demanding customers, Pirelli has always offered Porsche tyres that can offer both safety on the road and performance on track.
In the ‘80s, Porsche is the only manufacturer to request tyres designed specifically for its vehicles: this leads to the birth of the first tyres to be marked “tailor made” and, in the case of Porsche, identified with the “N” code.
On the 50th anniversary of the 911, the collaboration between Pirelli and Porsche is further strengthened: Pirelli is nominated “Porsche Best Supplier” by the Stuttgart-based manufacturer. Pirelli is also a key partner when it comes to Porsche SUVs. For the Macan, as well as the high performing P Zero™, the versatile Scorpion Verde™ All Season is also homologated and can therefore boast the exclusive “N0” initials.
